2018 Simon Lazarus, Jr. Junior Winner Varshini Odayar of Seven Hills High School with Judge Eddie Tyner, president of Enquirer Media and the USA TODAY Network

Varshini Odayar, a junior at The Seven Hills School, was the Junior winner of the Lazarus Award this year. As part of the Red Shirt Team, Varshini coordinates the bi-weekly packing of literally hundreds of thousands of nutritious meals for children not just in Cincinnati, but around the world. She also created her own non-profit organization, Sparking Lives, with a mission to empower the lives of orphans and needy children around Cincinnati and the world. Her organization’s main project is to provide first aid kits to those in need. In Cincinnati, Varshini has distributed more than 300 first aid kits. She hopes to soon branch out to the international community with her giving. Her commitment is clear. Upon receiving a Sodexo Stop Hunger grant scholarship, she donated the 100% of the funds, which provided food for 4,000 children. “I have a great passion for kids and also for health care at the same time,” said Varshini. “So combining the two equals a passion to help others and serve those in need.” http://local.cincinnati.com/share/story/260938
